The San Bartolomeo Apostolo Society of New Orleans, Louisiana

Saint Bartolomeo

Founded on March 23, 1879, the San Bartolomeo Apostolo Society is the oldest Italian Society in Louisiana. San Bartolomeo is the patron saint of Ustica and Ustica is a small, very fertile volcanic island approximately 9 miles long and it is about 35 miles north of the coast of the city Palermo in Sicily.

The main purpose of the society was to unite the Italians of Ustica when they arrived in New Orleans with the residents of the New Orleans area whose families also came from Ustica, as well as to provide help and assistance to members who may be in need.

The following is a list of Usticesi that are buried in the San Bartolomeo Apostolo Society Mausoleum located in the Metairie Cemetery, Avenue B, in New Orleans. This list has been compiled from the tomb inscriptions and from the original book of burials of the society. Some of the people listed in the tomb were moved to family plots at a later date.

The officers names at the time the society was founded are listed on the front of the mausoleum which also appears below. This information has been submitted by Mr. Peter Bertucci, President of the Society at present.

• The first occupant was S. Taranto, a mere child of 17 years old, in May of 1880.
• The last occupant was Josephine Di Lorenzo in May of 1962

Generally speaking, everyone was from Ustica or their parents were from Ustica. In an exception or two, the spouse was born in New Orleans and laid to rest in the St. Bart Tomb.
